I Believe In the Holy Spirit

Sermon Text  – 09.30.2018
[Acts 2:14-18 and John 3:6-8]
Clare Boothe Luce once said, “There are no hopeless situations. There are only people who have grown hopeless about them.” There once was a man who had two children, twin boys. The man was a mess – alcoholic, constantly out of work, abusive. One of his boys grew up to be an alcoholic, constantly out of work, abusive and angry. One day someone asked the son, “Why are you like this? Why are you the way that you are?” The boy, all grown up, shrugged and said, “Look at my father, what else could I become?” The twin brother also grew up, never touched alcohol, was always a hard worker, was kind, gentle and happy. One day someone asked him, “Why are you like this? Why are you the way that you are?” The boy, all grown up, shrugged and said, “Look at my father, what else could I become?” Perspective is everything. Life happens whether we want it to or not, success or failure is not what comes in our life – but how we handle what comes. There are no hopeless situations. There are only people who have grown hopeless about them.

I Believe In Jesus, Prt 2

Sermon Text – 09.23.2018
[Matthew 16:13-16 and Matthew 17:1-8]

In 1981, a Minnesota radio station reported a story about a stolen car, a missing VW bug in California. Apparently, in the news story the police were staging an incredibly intense search for the vehicle and the driver, even to the point of placing announcements on local radio stations trying to contact the thief. Now you might wonder – why were the police so desperate? Why the intense search for something so simple as a stolen car? Well, on the front seat of that stolen car sat a box of crackers that, unknown to the thief, were laced with poison. The owner of the car had intended to use the crackers as rat bait and so he had poisoned them, and was bringing them home when the car was stolen. The police and the owner of the VW bug were more interested in apprehending the thief to save his life, rather than recover the car – which was secondary. So often in our lives, when we run from God, we feel like we are trying to escape his punishment, but what we are actually doing is eluding his rescue.

Sermon Text  – 09.16.2018 [Matthew 4:1-10 and Hebrews 2:14-17]
Do you know what poor people need more than anything else? Some people say food, some people say money, some say shelter, safety, opportunity. But more than anything else, what poor people themselves claim they need is respect. For someone, anyone, to look at them and see more than just a victim, more than just a poor person. To believe in themselves, to rise above, they need someone else to believe in them – give them a chance.
